Overview
In addition to the main product, the steelmaking process generates the so called co-products. For every ton of steel produced, roughly 500 to 600 kg of co-products are generated. Initially they were called “waste products,” being stored in landfills or discarded in the environment.
With the creation of the Special Sales Area, CSN opted to leverage business in the domestic market and the foreign market, thus ensuring the correct disposal of these co-products.
This business unit is divided into the following segments:
- Carbochemicals
- Co-products
- Recyclables
- Lime
The applications of co-products are plenty: fine chemicals, agribusiness, aluminum industry, rubber, polymers, leather, metallurgy and as raw materials in other activities.
The business unit has great integration and synergy with the area of Environment of CSN, ensuring that all products are used in an environmentally-friendly way.
