Hydroeletric Power Stations: CTE, Itá and Igarapava
CTE – Power Station for Energy Co-generation
The Thermo-electric Co-generation Station (CTE - Central Termoelétrica de Co-geração de Energia)
CTE, was inaugurated by CSN in December 1999 and is the result of an advanced energy project and CSN's strategic vision of its energy supply.
CTE is fueled by the gases generated during steel making and represents energy savings of US$30million per year, before even considering the increased confidence in the electrical supply and other energies.
The plant generates up to 238 MW, which is around 60% President Vargas Mill's energy needs and also produces process vapor and blast air, which is used on the rolling lines, in the coke plant and blast furnaces.
Besides this, the plant can also supply energy the national grid, improving the quality of energy supply in the Southeastern region of Brazil.

Itá Hydro-electric Power Station
The Hydro-electric power station in Itá started operating in the latter half of 2000.
Located on the Uruguay River, bordering the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, it has 5 generators, and a total capacity of 1,450MW. Its output represents 61% of Santa Catarina's total consumption and 31% of that of Rio Grande do Sul. The plant guarantees a minimum output of 668 MW.
Itá Hydro-electric Power Station is co-owned by CSN (29.5%), Cimento Itambé (1.5%) and Gerasul (69%). For CSN, this is equivalent to a 167MW supply.

Igarapava Hydro-electric Power Station
Inaugurated in 1998, Igarapava Hydro-electric Power Station unites 5 companies (CSN itself, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), Companhia Mineira de Metais, Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais (Cemig) and Mineração Morro Velho) in a project representing an investment in the region of US$240 million.
Located in the state of Sao Paulo, Igarapava Hydro-electric Power Station has a total capacity of 210 MW, with a fall of 18.30m and a firm average of 126MW.
When the last of the 5 generators started operating, at the end of 1999, Igarapava achieved 210 MW. For CSN, this meant the guarantee of sufficient energy to power all activities at the Casa de Pedra iron ore mine as well as limestone and dolomite production at the Arcos mine.
