The company actively participates in the NICOLE Brasil network, a leading organization in developing and promoting solutions for the management of contaminated areas, which is formed by contamination professionals, consultancies and universities. CSN, a founding member of the group, engages in NICOLE through the Project and Environmental Liabilities Management, leading one of the technical working groups related to the development of environmental technologies (Soil Gas Intrusion).

Whether showing the commitment to continuously manage its environmental liabilities of industrial areas or recovering areas degraded by mining activities, the Company seeks to restore the environment using technological innovations and proven techniques, always in accordance with the relevant legislation.

Working Groups of the Center for Sustainability Studies of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (GVces).

Since 2014, CSN has contributed to activities of the working groups of the Center for Sustainability Studies of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (GVces), which works to develop sustainable strategies, policies and tools to be used by public administration and business management at local, national and international levels. In addition to producing knowledge and promoting the exchange of best practices among the participating companies, these groups issue publicly accessible publications at the end of each cycle, such as: " Inovação em desenvolvimento local em territórios com atuação de grandes empresas " (Innovation in local development in sites where large companies operate), " Guia de Implementação das Diretrizes Empresariais para Proteção Integral de Crianças e Adolescentes no Contexto de Grandes Empreendimentos " (Guide for Implementing Corporate Guidelines for Integral Protection of Children and Adolescents in Large Venture Contexts), " Diretrizes empresariais para a Valoração Econômica de Serviços Ecossistêmicos " (Business Guidelines for Economic Valuation of Ecosystem Services), and " Diretrizes empresariais para a Relato de Externalidades ambientais " (Business Guidelines for Environmental Externality Reporting). Since 2012, the company participates in the Climate Forum, organized by the Ethos Institute for Business and Social Responsibility. In 2015, it signed the Open Letter to Brazil on Climate Change, encouraging the Brazilian government to assume a leadership role during the 21st Conference of Parties of the United Nations Climate Change Conference held in Paris, COP-21.


Since 2010, CSN prepares greenhouse gas emission reports following the GHG Protocol guidelines to support its carbon management, risk mitigation and climate change adaptation. In 2015 and 2016, the company received the GHG Protocol’s Gold Seal for reporting all information concerning its units and submitting it to external verification.


CSN completes the "climate change, water and supply chain" questionnaires of CDP, reporting its parameters for climate change and water management.


Since 2015, CSN participates in meetings organized by BNDES and other partners, where Brazilian companies discuss and are encouraged to adopt, voluntarily, the Integrated Reporting model. This initiative is recognized and supported by the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC). The company recognizes there has been an evolution in the model for disclosing corporate information that associates financial results with the value created by other initiatives, such as social and environmental actions. CSN has embraced this cause by applying the initiative framework and analyzing the correlation of its capital to the company‘s strategy and its various financial and non-financial information.


Since 2012, the Company applies environmental, social and economic mapping criteria in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines to all of its operations. The data and indicators obtained in this process enable performance follow-up and assessment of the exposure to socio-environmental risks and future opportunities.
