CEMENTS

1. What is the difference between CSN‘s types of cement?

The main difference lies in the ratio of materials used in their composition and in their final resistance. Types CP II E 32 and CP II E 40 have between 6% and 34% slag (blast furnace residue), while CP III 40 RS has a greater content, from 35% to 70% in its composition.
For more details about the products, please go to our cements page.

2. Does the color of cement have any influence on its quality?

The lighter or darker color does not affect the quality of the product, being related to the origin of raw materials and additions used. Therefore, we recommend that you use the same brand and type of cement for the entire construction work.

3. How should I store the cement?

The cement should be stored in a dry, covered and closed place, safe from contact with water floor and walls. We recommend stacking at most 10 cement bags, on a pallet. Otherwise, the grains in the first bags will be hardened and will have to be fluffed before use.

4. Does the cement have an expiration date?

Yes, and you should pay attention to it. We recommend using the bagged product within 90 days after the date of manufacture, respecting the storage conditions.

5. What is the CSN cement drying time?

The beginning of setting (or curing) depends on each type of cement. Cement CP III 40 RS has a drying time of approximately 5 hours, whereas the CP I IE 32 and 40 take approximately 4 hours before it’ll begin to set.

6. Is the CSN cement environmentally sustainable?

Yes. CSN Cement can be considered the greenest among those produced in Brazil, as it takes advantage of the blast furnace slag (waste from steel making) for its production, which reduces the exploitation of natural reserves of limestone and clay and the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

7. What is the advantage of having slag in the cement composition?
  • It prevents cracks due to slow and gradual resistance gains;
  • It has lower porosity compared to slag-less cement;
  • It has high efficiency in aggressive environments such as sewage, fertilizer warehouses and marine environments;
  • It gains continuous resistance against compression even after 28 days;
  • It is environmentally sustainable since it reduces the exploitation of natural resources of limestone and clay and the amount of CO2 in the environment.
8. Does the amount of sand and water used in the mortar mixture influence its resistance?

Yes. More or less water can compromise the behavior of concrete or mortar, directly influencing the resistance to compression. It‘s recommended that you always use the right amount sand and gravel according to the proportion indication.

9. Can I use CSN cement in all works?

Yes. You can use it from the foundation to the finishing of your works, observing the mortar‘s drying time. The blast furnace slag used in cement composition results in a high quality material, with a more attractive price.

10. need to buy cement for a construction job here at my house. Can I buy it directly from CSN?

Yes. Steel is one of the least harmful raw materials, because it uses ferrous scrap for its production, saving natural resources and energy. It can be used up to 80% scrap as a raw material for the production of rebars and up to 15% for sheet steel. The recycling process reduces energy consumption, disposal of the material in the environment and also helps in the preservation of natural resources, avoiding the extraction of raw materials and CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. Furthermore, many of the products generated during production can be reused to manufacture new materials. The blast furnace slag, for example, is reused for the production of CSN cement.

3. Does steel generate co-products during its production?

Yes. It is estimated that each ton of steel produced generates from 500 kg to 600 kg of co-products that can be reused in other segments, such as fine chemicals, agribusiness, aluminum industry, rubber, polymers, leather, metallurgy, cement, and as raw material in other activities. These sub-products include: coal tar, ammonia, crude BTX and sulfur. For more information, visit the link.

PRODUCT‘S TECHNICAL QUESTIONS
1. Are there performance differences between the Normal Crystal (CN) and the Minimized Crystal (MI) among the galvanized steel sheets?

No. The difference between Normal Crystal and Minimized Crystal is only visual. If they have equivalent layers (same amount of zinc per square meter of surface), generally, they will have equal performance. The types of finishing can be viewed through this link.

2. For flat steel, for example in sheets used in construction, what is the difference between the dimensional tolerances "Mean to High" and "Mean to Low"?

Mean to High may be understood as the thickness variation in the upper range, for example, when it may be up to 5% thicker than the predetermined size; mean to Low refers to the change related to the lower range. There may also be variations called "symmetrical," with size tolerances both in the upper and lower ranges of the sheets.

MARKET UNIT: PACKAGING
1. What are the advantages of using steel packaging?
  • It’s made of recyclable materials;
  • It has magnetic properties that make it for easier recovery and recycling;
  • It protects and preserves food better;
  • Longer shelf life for food at room temperature, including meat and other groceries;
  • Vitamins and minerals are retained and the taste remains fresh for longer.
2. How should I store steel cans?

Cans must be kept in clean, dry and well ventilated places, sheltered from sunlight. Despite having their own protection coating that slows down the aging process, oxidation (or rust) is a natural process that occurs with metal packaging. Therefore, inappropriate conditions of humidity and temperature must be avoided in order to prolong the life of the stored product.

3. If I cut myself with a steel package, am I at risk of contracting a disease, like tetanus?

It depends. Tetanus is a disease caused by microbes present on many surfaces. Therefore, any contaminated material (metal or not) can cause tetanus.

4. How are canned foods made?

The sequence of steps and the time required for processing may differ according to the kind of food, since some are more perishable and sensitive to temperature variations than others. You can view the packaging process by clicking this link.

5. Is the durability of canned food the same as of food stored in other types of packaging materials?

The durability of canned food will depend on the type of food. Because they are hermetically sealed and cooked within the can, they have higher durability without the need for preservatives. Provided they remain sealed, canned food have their taste and nutritional properties preserved for longer periods of time at room temperature. Moreover, canning food is safer since it has greater resistance and prevents light and oxygen from entering, preserving the product for longer on shelves or at home. Get more information by clicking this link.

6. Do dented cans compromise the quality of the food?

The food packages are coated with an elastic protective layer. Even when they are dented, there is no compromising of food quality. However, it is recommended that you do not to consume food from perforated or stuffed cans, since they indicate a failure in the product processing.

STEELCOLORS

1.Where can I buy Steelcolors®?

CSN (Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional) is the only producer of Steelcolors, but the product is sold by its reseller network, with trained teams for commercial service.

2. What is the minimum amount for purchase?

Through the distribution network, the product may be purchased in any amount.

3. Can the Steelcolors® be purchased in the color I want?

Steelcolors was developed to offer 23 colors, but it is available for immediate purchase only in 4 standard colors (silver, white, blue and red). Custom colors may be developed on request, as long as the amount falls within the minimum volume for production. Request the Color Sampler.

4. Can Steelcolors® be re-painted or refinished?

Yes. Re-painting may be required for several reasons. Since this type of paint will dry in the air, it will not have the same performance level of a paint applied and cured thermally in factory, under the process known as coil-coating.

Manufacturers of paints, suppliers for this type of process, are capable of producing paints that are compatible and with the same hue.

For small amounts, intended for retouch, you must take care to use paint that is compatible with the original paint (polyester resin). First test the paint on a small and not-visible area before you begin to paint the desired area.

CSN is not responsible for re-painting and refinishing services, and does not sell the paint.

5. Can stickers be applied to Steelcolors®?

Steelcolors’ polyester resin paint system is ideal for the application of adhesive films.

6. What temperatures may Steelcolors® be exposed to?

Steel is thermally very stable; you can work with it from -50 ºC to + 300 ºC without major changes. However, the paint is limited by the curing temperature in the paint line, that is, 232 ºC.

7. Does Steelcolors® work as a thermal insulator?

No, but because its substrate is GALVALUME steel, which is "Energy Star" certified, it has characteristics to improve thermal comfort.

8. Does Steelcolors® work as an acoustic insulator?

No, but it can be used with products that do.

9. What does it happen to Steelcolors® in a fire?

Because it is a substrate in steel, Steelcolors is incombustible, meaning it’ll not fuel a fire. The steel reaches its melting point at 1200 ºC and the paint has a melting point of 232 ºC.

10. How is the maintenance of Steelcolors® carried out?
  • Steelcolors can be easily cleaned with water and mild detergent.
  • Do not use abrasive products or equipment that may damage the paint.
  • It is recommended that you clean it once to twice a year, depending on the location of the building.
  • In saline environments, the frequency of cleaning should be higher to remove the salt and sand build up, known as "salt spray."
  • Usually, Steelcolors should receive the same care as refrigerator and car paintings, despite being different paints.
  • In the case of dirt of difficult removal, ask for our User Guide, available on our technical and commercial department.
11. Does Steelcolors® tolerate saline environments?

According to salt spray testing (that simulates a saline atmosphere), Steelcolors resists 1,000h.

12. What material should be used for Steelcolors® auxiliary structure?

It is advisable that you use galvanized steel profiles. If another type of metal is used, an insulating protection layer must be applied to the region of bi-metallic contact in order to prevent galvanic corrosion.

It is also recommended that you use components and accessories with a durability compatible with the Steelcolors product, which has Galvalume steel as its base.

In our user guide you can find information on compatible components and accessories. Ask for a copy!
